This session is a reprise of a successful session held on July 2nd. Images from that session are available on Picasa. Here are some details:

  • Candles
    • What's burning? The vapor stream
    • What''s burning - find the carbon, find the hydrogen
    • Pure oxygen - the changes
    • Carbon dioxide - the end
  • Magnesium - yes, metal burns
  • Flash paper
    • No air needed!
    • Making flash paper from paper
  • Liquids burn by themselves without air
  • Fire-breathing, the safe way
  • Really fast burning - hydrogen and oxygen from water, and back
  • What gives flames their colors? Adding colors

It's all safe, if you know what you're doing. Vince Gutschick, the demo and experiment leader, is a Ph. D. chemist who has survived all this and more, and so did his parents' house.
